The National Insulation Association (NIA), representing over 90% of the UK’s home insulation industry including installers and manufacturers, reported that an independent survey has found over half of UK residents remain unaware that over 50% of the heat they are paying for in their homes can be lost through uninsulated cavity walls and lofts.
Neil Marshall, Chief Executive of the NIA advised: “Home insulation is the single most effective method to stop the heat escaping and to save money on domestic energy bills – typically cutting around £260 per year by simply insulating your loft and cavity walls.” Marshall states that in general “…the cost of installing cavity wall and loft insulation pays for itself within two years.”
Susan Jones, Energy Efficiency Advice Manager at the Energy Saving Trust said: “Most homes should be able to have either their loft or cavity walls insulated for less than £250 each, due to the many grants and offers to help with the cost. If you are over 70 or in receipt of benefit the work could even be free. It only takes a few hours for the work to be carried out so it’s a good investment.”
Flat owners are advised to visit the NIA website at www.nationalinsulationassociation.co.uk to find their nearest installer. All members of the NIA provide a free home survey, advise about grants and subsidies available and are governed by a strict code of professional practice.
