At 47 storeys high, Manchester’s Beetham Tower is more than just the North-West of England’s tallest building – it’s a symbol of the city’s ability to reinvent itself from grim northern industrial town to one of Europe’s most exciting cities. Looming above neighbouring Victorian warehouses, this glass-fronted tower achieved iconic status within months of construction and is now Manchester’s most sought-after residential address. But it hasn’t all been plain-sailing.
Since its construction in 2006, The Beetham Tower has rarely been out of the news.
In May 2006, Manchester Evening News reported that production of soap-opera Coronation Street had been disrupted by a high-pitched noise from the 171-metre tower. A few months later it reported how a piece of cracked glass had resulted in the surrounding streets being cordoned off. Finally in September 2007,
The Daily Telegraph claimed The Beetham Tower had symbolised the end of Britain’s love aff air with the buy-to-let market. “Last year it was a sought-after address for young professionals, footballers and celebrities – an exciting new skyscraper containing sleek, modern flats above a five-star hotel and a cocktail bar. But now it sits almost half empty, a 47-storey monument to Britain’s buy-to-let blowout.”
But two years after that damning report, the building is nearly 100% occupied and has finally become the landmark development residents had always hoped it would be. Local agent Sally Ann Smith of Philip James is a big fan; “The Beetham has breathtaking views from every apartment regardless of the aspect - this has always been the main selling point. The building’s air of prestige and pristine finish are the reasons we have a constant stream of enquiries. The minute we list a Beetham Tower apartment it is gone within days, sometimes hours!” Residents are equally impressed. Apartment owner Carl Austin who helped set up the Residents Committee proudly said: ‘We set up the association to ensure a high-quality environment for residents and to maintain the unique status of such an iconic building’. One of the buildings original residents, Austin is as happy now as when he first moved in “I have lived here for 3 years and although The Beetham has had its issues, time has passed and they have been addressed. Th e building is a wonderful place to live - I love waking up and looking out across Manchester’s skyline.”
