I don’t know if it’s climate change, the credit crunch or the desire to see the back of George W. Bush but this year is flying by!
Not only is the year flying but as each month goes by another scam comes to light. I am going to have to reframe my attitudes because quite frankly I should no longer be shocked. However, I do still find my chin hitting the floor!
The latest shockers arose from a recent site we took over the management of whereby the previous agents were making a 1,000 per cent mark up on selling on visitor permits for parking as well as 350 per cent mark up on gate fobs! No wonder there is so much suspicion and mistrust around.
The same site also threw up one of the more remarkable exchanges I have ever had with a firm of lawyers. One day out of the blue we received a letter informing us that the firm handled all legal matters for this site.
We asked the directors who informed us they had never heard of them. It transpired the previous agents had appointed said solicitors.
Upon being told the directors did not wish to use them and please let us have files and papers belonging to the client. I then received two emails intended for the firm’s internal consumption. Being kind and not wanting to find out their even blunter opinions (not that they could have got much blunter!) I sent a note back to let them know they were not writing to the party they thought they were writing to.
To this I received the most arrogant, pompous statement that put me in the wrong by saying I shouldn’t have read them and I should know it is good practice to delete emails not intended for you!
So you can’t please all the people all the time but a lawyer can always find the high ground even buried six feet under in mire!
